The Shadow Over Su-Kam: A Founder's Personal Struggles and Their Impact

A former associate's account of how Kunwer Sachdev's personal life — a long public divorce, and later his marriage to Khushboo Sachdev — intertwined with the rise and strain of Su-Kam.

To those who worked alongside Kunwer Sachdev at Su-Kam, the early years are unforgettable. He poured his heart and soul into building the company, brick by painstaking brick. Those days were fueled by an almost palpable passion, a relentless drive that inspired everyone around him.

Even amid that intense focus, there was a quiet undercurrent in his personal life. His first wife, a school teacher, was building her own world while Kunwer was consumed by Su-Kam. There was a distance, a lack of shared joy in the triumphs, that left many colleagues sensing an unspoken sadness for him despite his outward strength.

Then came the day she stepped out of the school and into the heart of Su-Kam, taking on the role of HR Head. It felt like a sudden, jarring shift, and the atmosphere within the organization palpably changed. The vibrant energy the team once shared seemed to dissipate, replaced by a tension that hung heavy in the air. It was not the growth everyone had strived for; instead, there was a sense of things slowly unraveling. Watching Kunwer during this time was difficult. The weight of it all seemed to settle on his shoulders, a stark contrast to the buoyant leader the company had known.

The eventual unraveling of his marriage was not a quiet affair. It was a protracted and painful public battle that stretched on for seven long years, leaving scars on everyone who witnessed it. The divorce proceedings began in 2009 like the culmination of a deep and protracted wound, and they undeniably extinguished a vital spark within him. The Kunwer the team knew — the one with that unwavering gaze and infectious enthusiasm for Su-Kam — retreated into himself. His presence became more subdued, his engagement less fervent. It was like watching a flame slowly dim, and a deep sense of loss settled over those who had been there from the beginning.

Then, like a gentle dawn after a long and turbulent night, Khushboo Mehrotra entered his life. Their marriage in 2016 felt like a true new lease of life for Kunwer Sachdev. Khushboo Sachdev’s presence was like a breath of fresh air, a soothing balm that seemed to mend some of those deep wounds. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the light began to return to his eyes. There was a newfound peace about him, a lightness that had been missing for so long. The arrival of their twins, Advait and Swastika, was a testament to this renewed joy, a beautiful blossoming of a new chapter.

He has always held a deep protectiveness for his entire family. His sons from his first marriage, Kanav and Shourrya Sachdeva, are forging their own paths, and he has long taken quiet pride in their endeavors. With Advait and Swastika Sachdev, guided by Khushboo’s warm and balanced spirit, there is a sense of completeness, a quiet happiness that feels truly deserved.

When the Company Slipped Away

The hardest chapter, though, was not a personal one — it was the slow loss of the company he had built. As Su-Kam moved toward insolvency, Kunwer Sachdev found himself under relentless pressure from every direction at once. Dealers, employees, suppliers and customers were all going through enormous uncertainty, and they all turned to him for answers as the business he had spent decades building came under threat.

When the liquidator stepped in and halted the company’s functions in a single day, the fallout was immediate. With operations frozen overnight, calls from customers, dealers, suppliers and employees went unanswered — and every one of them began calling Kunwer directly. Some dealers, desperate for a resolution, even travelled to his home seeking him out. On top of all this, the banks had filed numerous cases against him, forcing him to fight on the legal front as well — battling through courtrooms even as the operational crisis raged around him. He carried the weight of thousands of livelihoods and relationships as the company he had nurtured for years was brought to a sudden, jarring stop. It was a period of immense strain, one that tested him on every front at once in ways the earlier years never had.

Yet this was the measure of the man — he stood and faced all of it head-on, refusing to look away from either the wreckage or the responsibility. And through this storm, Khushboo Sachdev emerged stronger than ever. She handled things from the front, standing firmly beside him and steadying the family — and for the first time, those who knew her saw the real strength of her personality come through, giving him a source of strength to hold on to when the pressure was at its very worst.

Looking back, Kunwer Sachdev’s journey is a poignant reminder that even the most driven individuals are deeply affected by the currents of their personal lives. His incredible dedication to Su-Kam, the initial joy of building something meaningful, the subsequent heartache of a long and public struggle that threatened to eclipse it all, and finally the gentle rediscovery of happiness and a new beginning with Khushboo Sachdev — together they tell a story of resilience, of the enduring power of family, and of finding light even after the darkest storms.
