The Man Who Made Inverters Smarter – Kunwer Sachdev’s 4-Star Revolution

On 21 July 2015, Su-Kam under Kunwer Sachdev became the first inverter company in India to earn a BEE 4-star energy-efficiency rating — the story of his high-frequency inverter.

He Did What No One Else Dreamed Of — And Then Raised the Bar

In 2008, when most of the industry was still catching up with the basics of inverter design, Kunwer Sachdev had already started working on something extraordinary — the initial models of a high-frequency inverter that would eventually change India’s power backup landscape.

It wasn’t a trend. It wasn’t a borrowed concept.
It was vision, pure and relentless.

A Milestone No One Had Achieved Before

Fast forward to 21st July 2015, a date that now stands tall in India’s energy efficiency timeline.

Su-Kam Power Systems Ltd., under the leadership of Kunwer Sachdev, became the first inverter company in India to receive a 4-star rating from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) — a landmark recognition from the Ministry of Power, Government of India.

For Kunwer, this was never just about getting a badge.
It was about setting a new benchmark in energy efficiency, one that had real, measurable benefits for every household.

While others were still building products to work, he was building products to perform better, longer, and smarter.

Energy Efficiency with Purpose

At a time when even a single bulb consumed 80 watts of power, Kunwer’s inverter stood out as a beacon of energy responsibility. His design didn’t just save energy — it redefined what efficiency looked like. While traditional systems bled power silently, his high-frequency inverter ensured that every watt counted.

This wasn’t just engineering.
It was empathy in design.

A Star That Lit the Path for Others

Kunwer didn’t just stop at building a product.
He built India’s first in-house R&D unit for inverter technology, recognized by the Government of India back in 2002. That R&D unit became the birthplace of innovation — where ideas turned into patents, and prototypes turned into real solutions for millions.

His high-frequency inverter wasn’t just a UPS. It was a silent guardian of productivity, making sure homes and offices stayed lit, connected, and alive — even when the grid failed.

A Legacy of Firsts

Even today, while the market is crowded with brands, it was Kunwer Sachdev who wrote the rulebook.

From pioneering Battery Equalization to leading in energy star ratings, from dreaming of smart solar solutions to making them a reality in 90+ countries — he has always stayed years ahead of his time.

It’s no wonder that his journey is not just about a company or a product.
It’s about a man who quietly, consistently, and passionately shaped an entire industry — so the rest could follow.

In the News

The achievement was independently reported in the industry press. Energetica India covered how Su-Kam’s inverter received the 4-star rating from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, noting its 89–91% DC-to-AC efficiency against the 75–83% typical of the market at the time. Kunwer Sachdev later discussed Su-Kam’s efficiency-led move into solar hybrid inverters in a 2018 interview with pv magazine India, and the company’s record is summarised on Wikipedia.
