Kunwer Sachdev — The Man of Innovation

A profile of Kunwer Sachdev — the man of innovation who founded Su-Kam in 1998 and brought quality-first, cost-saving power-backup and pure sine wave technology to Indian homes.

Kunwer Sachdev is the man behind better power-saving solutions in the country. He is known for bringing in some great development changes in the power structure of the nation. Kunwer Sachdev started his career as a television cable dealer and distributor. Troubled by the constant woes of the people regarding power failures and breakdowns, he decided to come up with a great solution for solving their problems. He started Su-Kam in 1998 and the company was an instant success. Su-Kam was one brand that was making products keeping in mind the requirements and usage of the people. The products were of high quality and were sold after many quality checks.

Kunwer Sachdev follows a clear rule of quality before quantity. He does not approve of a low-quality Su-Kam product being sold in the market. He focuses more on efficient and cost-saving power solutions than on selling highly priced products. Kunwer Sachdev is also credited with bringing Pure Sine Wave technology to the country — a clean inverter output that runs sensitive appliances safely, and one that pairs naturally with solar charging. It is not only environment-friendly but also financially better over the long run. A true team leader, he made sure that the decisions taken by the company took the opinions of employees into account. He remains a man to watch, one who keeps coming up with interesting projects.

Innovation, in the Press and in the Record

Kunwer Sachdev’s reputation as a man of innovation rests on a remarkable run of engineering firsts. Under his leadership, Su-Kam introduced India’s first MOSFET-based inverter, the first microcontroller-based inverter, and the first DSP sine-wave inverter — and his plastic-body inverter was named an “Innovation of the Decade” by India Today. He was the first Indian entrepreneur to patent in the power-backup industry, building a portfolio of 76+ technology patents along with dozens of design patents, documented in the Su-Kam patents archive. At its peak, the company he built reached a turnover of around ₹1,200 crore and exported to more than 90 countries.

His thinking has been covered in the industry press over the years. In a 2018 interview with pv magazine India, he discussed Su-Kam’s move into solar hybrid inverters; Ups Inverter Info published a “6 Questions” interview with him as founder and MD; and the broader record of his work is summarised on his Wikipedia profile.
